You may have heard there are foods that can increase IQ. But did you know the less healthy foods that can lower the ability of the brain?

If you’re curious, here’s the answer from Reader’s Digest.

Sugar

It’s no secret if the excess sugar is harmful to health, but there is new research that shows that sugar may also reduce the ability of the brain. In research conducted on mice, the UCLA researchers found that rats fed high-fructose corn syrup solution of the difficulty out of the labyrinth, slow in learning, and memory loss compared with mice fed high-fructose corn syrup, as well as omega-3 fatty acids are believed to increase the ability of the brain.

The researchers speculate, because fructose lowers brain activity affects the ability of insulin to help the brain cells to use sugar in the process of the mind and emotions.Omega-3 fatty acids can prevent the effects of certain dangers of fructose in the brain. To that end, reduce or minimize your intake of sugar in the body and the consumption of foods rich in omega-3, including walnuts, salmon, flaxseed, and soybeans.

Red meat and butter

Foods that contain high saturated fats (bad fats) can harm brain function, according to new Harvard research published in the Annals of Neurology. Researchers studied the eating habits and its relation to brain function in 6,000 women over four years. They found that women who ate the most saturated fat scored lower on tests of brain function and memory. While women who consume monounsaturated fats (found in foods like olive oil and avocados) has a higher score.

You do not need to avoid sources of saturated fats entirely, but select animal products that have low or no fat, such as cheese, yogurt, and milk. Avoid processed meats like bacon. Eat more protein from vegetable sources, like soy and nuts.

Chips, pizza and other junk food

A study in the UK in 2011 to nearly 4,000 children found that children who eat junk food at the age of three years will decline slightly IQ five years later when compared with children who eat healthy foods. Healthy food choices and smart in early childhood seems to influence the children’s verbal ability. Healthy food is essential in the early years of brain development.

Chewing gum

A recent study in England published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology found that chewing gum during practice memorizing can disrupt short-term memory. The researchers believe, may be able to deter chewing action when given concentration. This finding contradicts previous research that found a positive association between chewing gum and doing tasks.

Although research is still confusing, be sure to enhance the ability of the brain in your daily routine, such as drinking plenty of water (dehydration can affect the focus and sharpness of the brain), enough sleep, and play the brain game.

Low-carbohydrate diet

Carbohydrate deficiency can weaken the ability of the brain, energy, and mood). Tufts University tested 19 women aged 22-55 years and found that when carbohydrate is eliminated in the diet, they showed a gradual decline in cognitive abilities compared to those who choose low-calorie diet, but still eat carbs.

Your body needs carbohydrates for essential functions, including triggering the brain. So, avoid diets that eliminate or severely limit carbohydrates. Choose healthy carbohydrates, like pasta and whole wheat bread, brown rice and quinoa.
